The word is getting out about ARTSee & Shop, The Cultural Council’s second annual art and cultural engagement gallery, located at the Markets at Town Center. What most people may not know is how ARTSee & Shop started and the extent of the sponsorship from Hines, the parent company of The Markets at Town Center.

If you’ve been to the gallery, you were probably surprised to see such an impressive display of local artists and creatives in a place like the Town Center, where national chain stores are the expected retail experience.  It’s a wonderful option for shoppers looking for something unique and the opportunity to shop local. And, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the Jacksonville arts community to have their work for sale in such a visible location on the Southside where local artwork can sometimes be elusive.

The idea of ARTSee & Shop  started last year, when the Markets at Town Center approached the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville about activating one of their vacant storefronts for the holiday season. The then Executive Director, Joy Young, jumped at the idea and the first ARTSee & Shop opened during the months of November and December, 2019, with almost 40 local artists. This year we have over 60 local artists in a beautiful 5000+ square foot, centrally located storefront.

In addition to the expanded storefront, Hines brought on a partner to the gallery as part of their diversity and inclusion initiative.  The UNF LGBTQ Resource Center has joined us, bringing new artists, vision and a safe space for dialogue and awareness. Hines' commitment to a culture of diversity and inclusion is experienced by their 4800 employees across the globe. We want to take this opportunity to thank Hines for making this all possible and tell a bit more about their incredibly generous sponsorship. Not only did Hines provide the storefront, they have provided all the signage, utilities, and a monetary stipend to help pay for staff, entertainment, and advertising. Hines and the management staff of the Markets at Town Center have gone above and beyond to support us and set us up for success.

As the local arts and cultural organization that’s been given the honor to curate the gallery, we want to thank Hines and the Markets of Town Center for being a strong supporter of the Jacksonville arts and culture community and a company who lives by its commitment to  social responsibility, health and wellness, the arts, education and community beautification.
