2007 Florida “State of the Arts” License Plate Grant Program Awards

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville has awarded Florida “State of the Arts” License Plate Grants to 10 area nonprofit organizations for 2007. The purpose of the grant program is to provide funding for the arts and cultural programs of area nonprofits. Grants are made possible through revenue from the sale of Florida “State of the Arts” license plates in Duval County.

The following organizations were each awarded $1,000 grants for the cultural program described:

THE ARC JACKSONVILLE – The organization has replicated a model program called Artistic Realization Technologies (A.R.T.), which enables the severely developmentally disabled to communicate through the creation of art. Funds will be used for brochures to raise awareness about the A.R.T. program and the availability of artworks for sale.

ART WITH A HEART FOR CHILDREN – Organization provides an art-in-healing program for sick and injured children at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Nemours Children’s Clinic.
Funds will be used for art supplies.

THE BRIDGE OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA – The Bridge Urban Springfield after-school art program provides a safe environment for underserved children and youths to enhance their interest and participation in the creative arts. The grant will be used for instructor fees.

CHILD GUIDANCE CENTER – Program provides art therapy to children diagnosed with mental health problems. Program is administered by master level mental health professionals who have been trained by a certified art therapist. Funds will be used for art materials and supplies at art studios in outpatient centers.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS OF JACKSONVILLE – Low-income, at-risk teen boys participating in an after-school program will create a mural depicting life choices and produce an associated short “documentary.” The grant will help fund the costs of supplies and materials.

JACKSONVILLE FILM EVENTS – The “Viva Cinema” program is a side-bar of the Jacksonville Film Festival. It features Spanish language films and brings in guest filmmakers to meet the audience for after-screening discussions. The grant will be used for accommodations for the visiting filmmakers.

PACE CENTER FOR GIRLS – Juvenile girls participating in PACE will create a tile mural, which will be displayed on the outside of a downtown building. A video will be made to document the project and its outcomes. The grant will be used for supplies, materials and equipment associated with the project.

THE RECYCLES ORCHESTRA – This group of retired amateur musicians provides numerous free concerts to schools, nursing homes, community groups and churches in Duval County. The grant will help the band to purchase percussion instruments, sheet music and amplification.

RISING STARS OF TOMORROW – The organization will work with the Hispanic and Latino community to conduct a Cultural Diversity Festival Celebration using the performing arts. The grant will be used for event expenses such as costumes, stage props, printing and advertising.

WOMEN’S CENTER OF JACKSONVILLE – “Art and Soul” is an art exhibition series and educational program housed at the Women’s Center. Related workshops focus on both technique and the use of creative expression for healing and personal growth. The grant will be used for facilitator/presenter fees and honoraria, postage and printing.

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville works to advance the appreciation and expression of art and culture by increasing community awareness of cultural activities and issues; providing arts education programs; and offering funding and technical assistance to cultural organizations and individual artists. Funding is provided in part by the City of Jacksonville; Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Arts Council; and the National Endowment for the Arts.
