2007 Capital Grant Awards Press Release

CULTURAL SERVICE CAPITAL PROGRAM FUNDS
CAPITAL PROJECTS OF SIX ORGANIZATIONS

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Six Duval County cultural organizations have been awarded grants for capital improvements through the Cultural Service Capital Program. The program is funded by the City of Jacksonville and administered by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.

The purpose of the Cultural Service Capital Program is to coordinate the City of Jacksonville’s support and funding for the renovation, construction and acquisition of cultural facilities in Duval County. Grant awards must be matched on a one-to-one cash basis.

Organizations receiving 2007 capital awards include:

Beaches Area Historical Society $25,000
To restore circa 1900 railway depot, which once served Mayport, and now is part of the BAHS’ historical campus. Work includes restoration of exterior façade and upgrade of wheelchair access to meet ADA standards.

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens $23,878
To replace roof over Stein Gallery and Uible Loggia. Aging roof leaks and puts artwork and museum facility at risk as well as limiting the capability of the museum to present special exhibitions.

Florida Theatre Performing Arts Center $25,000
To replace aging equipment and make upgrades to the sound system in order to keep up with theater technology advances and production requirements of touring artists. Increasingly, equipment has had to be rented to meet these specifications.

Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra $ 5,870
To upgrade sound and stage equipment to enhance the cultural product and performance experience delivered to the Symphony’s audiences. The project will replace old, deteriorating equipment; provide new technology; and replace rental equipment.

Players by the Sea $19,200
To upgrade the air-conditioning system as the current cooling system is insufficient to handle comfort levels for productions and educational programs that have expanded into the hot summer months. The Theatre will use a new efficient technology popular in Europe in order to save costs.

WJCT Public Broadcasting $24,958
To upgrade FM local radio production facilities to serve all of WJCT’s radio and on-line broadcast streams, including High Definition Arts. Project includes creation of a new live radio production studio and updating the production control room for the Radio Reading Service.

“Funding provided through the Cultural Service Capital Program ensures more services to Jacksonville’s residents and visitors through improved facilities,” said Robert Arleigh White, Cultural Council Executive Director.

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville works to advance the appreciation and expression of art and culture by increasing community awareness of cultural activities and issues; providing arts education; and offering funding and technical assistance to cultural organizations and individual artists. Funding for the Council is provided in part by the City of Jacksonville; Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council; and the National Endowment for the Arts.
