Joe Segal (St. Augustine, Fla.)
Sculpture: Cast and carved concrete with hand-chisled marble aggregate
Sign: Cast concrete and hand-chisled marble
Joe Segal was confronted with a difficult task; to create a piece that serves as both as an artwork and as identification for the building. He chose to create one vertical sculpture and one horizontal sculpture that doubles as a sign for the library and community center. Both illustrate Segal’s trademark minimalism and hand-worked surfaces. In this work and others, the artist strips away the surface of the material to reveal what lies beneath, much like the erosive processes in nature. Both pieces intentionally compliment the exterior of the library.
