Art In The Jail

Tools for self-expression can become tools for a better life. Art in the Jail is an arts education program for juveniles jailed as adults in the Duval County Jail. The mission of the program is to provide these young men with exposure to various arts disciplines in an effort to improve applicable life skills and introduce them to a creative outlet that can help them become successful, productive citizens.

In this collaboration between the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and the State Attorney’s Office, 4th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, activities take place in P.S. 176, the only public school in the country housed within a jail. Professional artists work with inmates throughout the school year in creative writing and visual arts projects.
